I am terrified of snakes.
Like scream, run, and pee-my-pants-when-anywhere-near-one kind of terrified.
Yet, there is something really cool about them — they shed their skin as part of their growing process, with the added perk that it also removes parasites that could harm them.
Did you know that humans also shed their entire outer layer of skin every 2-4 weeks? Really, did you know that?
If we, like our skin, could shed the beliefs and thoughts that are making us stuck or holding us back, imagine the possibilities!
Changing can be one of the hardest things we do in life.
Sticking with status quo is easier, less disruptive, and more comfortable.
Yet, without change, are we really growing?
Often we are resistant to making changes in our lives because of who we disappoint along the way, or how we were told we should be, rather than how we want to be.
We have to be willing to shed the old to make room for the new.
Jenna Kutcher mentions in her book, “How Are You, Really?,” the idea of a “sunk cost fallacy” where we finish the book because we started it, stay in a job we hate because the perks seem fancy, stay married because it is then starting over.
“We keep and cling and stay, and hope that it will all be worth it, or because we don’t want everything we’ve invested to have been for nothing.” - Jenna Kutcher
It’s an interesting book that shares her experience of going from the corporate world, to a wedding photographer, to an artist, podcaster, author, and digs into so many reasons why we resist making changes in our lives.
If it feels like you are coasting along or always taking the easy route, it might be time to pause and ask yourself why?

And, maybe one day, I won’t pee my pants when I see a snake — but don’t hold your breath.
