Stop picking that thing on your face.

Did I get your attention?

How many of us have some sort of odd habit when we feel anxious?

We pick a blemish, bite our nails, pull our hair out or some other bad habit.

You might even find that you nitpick a coworker, your spouse, or kid.

We pick at something and think it will make everything better and most of the time it makes it worse.

Why do we do it?

We want perfection.

We feel anxious.

We think it relaxes us.

Most of the time we are trying to avoid a specific feeling, or feeling something at all.

We do not want to look at what is really bothering us.

The next time you go to pick at something or someone...

Stop.

Leave it or them alone.

Take a moment to write down your thoughts and feelings. What are they trying to tell you? What are you avoiding?

When you start to notice the thoughts and feelings behind “picking” at things in your life, you will know in your body when you are “picking” and when you are truly taking care of yourself.
