We all know the quote: “The true test of a man’s (woman’s) character is what he (she) does when no one is watching.”
Oddly, in 2020, everyone is watching and no one is watching.
If we think in terms of social media, it feels like everyone is watching.
If we think in terms of working in an office, where we are 7 months into this WFH experiment, it may feel like no one is watching.
For many of us, we may attempt to dress up from the waist up, but many of us have even given up on that.
We are spending money on comfy joggers, slippers, and sometimes rarely do our hair. Because — who cares?
We might not be receiving the in person feedback we are used to, without an informal run-in in the hallway, bathroom, or a desk drive-by. Now we might have to seek it out in creative ways.
Or we can decide to not let others feedback define us, and instead go within and decide that what we are doing is enough.
It takes courage, vulnerability, and the patience to listen to that voice inside.
It require us to slow down and listen.
Maybe that is the lesson of 2020.
To slow down, listen to your inner voice, and be okay with what you see.
Be who you are when no one is watching.
