Fitting in or being yourself

I was reading the book “Welcome to the United States of Anxiety” by Jennifer Lancaster. She discusses all sorts of anxieties, but one is on how we dressed growing up. As a child of the 80’s I can remember the trauma I felt over being poor and not having the cool, name brand clothes. At that time it is what mattered to fit in.

It baffles me as I think about it now. I remember in elementary school it was a thing that on the day we had our Girl Scout troop meeting, we wore our uniform to school. Damn was that thing ugly. And yet I wore it.

I was raised to lead and to do the right thing.

Yet, it was hard to find your place.

To fit in and be yourself.

I think about it with kids today. Which is harder?

Fit in our be yourself?

It is the same for adults.

Are you going to be the one to speak up and be disruptive, or stay in the corner and follow others?

We get to decide each and every moment how we want to show up. We get to decide who we want to be. It is so much easier when we have clarity on who we want to be, whether we care if we fit in, or if we would rather be a misfit, disruptive, and stand for our beliefs.

I’m here to help you decide what you want. Sign up for a quick chat to learn more about how I can help you get really clear on what you want.
