My Favorite Books of 2023

Happy New Year!

This was a year of health challenges which oddly meant that there were times when I was in bed and the most I could do was read on my phone. I read 130 books this year, a record number for me, so this list below are my favorite titles from the year, with a mixture of fiction, non-fiction, and new for me — poetry.

  • The Creative Act (Rick Rubin)

  • Take My Hand (Dolen Perkins Valdez)

  • Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One (Raphaëlle Giordano)

  • Us Three (Ruth Jones)

  • Remember Love (Cleo Wade)

  • Nothing to See Here (Kevin Wilson)

  • I Hope This Finds You Well (Kate Baer) / poems

  • The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control (Katharine Morgan Schafler)

  • Radically Content (Jamie Varon)

  • Brave New Medicine (Cynthia Li)

  • The Last Thing He Told Me (Laura Dave)

  • Signs (Laura Lynn Jackson)

  • You Could Make This Place Beautiful (Maggie Smith)

  • Heart Talk (Cleo Wade)

I’d love to hear your top books of 2023. If you pick one from my list, I hope you choose, “The Creative Act” by Rick Rubin. You can sit and read it quickly or you can do what I did, and savor it over a longer period of time. I do not usually re-read books, but it will be one I continue to go back to for inspiration.

Here are three more lists in case you want to review my books favorites from 2022, 2021 or 2020.
