How to have resolutions whenever you want them

I have never been one to focus on New Year’s Resolutions.

I see so many individuals feel guilt and shame when they don’t follow through with their resolutions. They may start strong and then lose steam within a few weeks or months. They often decide in January and then wait until the next year before setting anything new.

What if instead of focusing on “resolutions” we set “intentions” throughout the year?

What do you intend to do this year?

Think of it this way. Rather than creating a resolution to exercise everyday, what if you had an intention that you wanted to live a healthier life? That might include more exercise and eating healthy.

Does one feel different in your mind and body?

What happens is our mind plays little tricks on us. It is a new calendar year, so our brain tells us there is a reset button that happens on January 1. And when you really look at it, how is January 1 any different than December 31? Isn’t it just another day?

Mentally we think of it as “a fresh start” or that “this year will be different.”

But actually you can hit the refresh button at ANY time.

So rather than think about just having New Years resolutions - why not just resolve or decide to do that thing now? Why just do it starting January 1? Why not in March, or July, or in October?

What are you intending to do now? Go after that, do it long enough that it becomes a habit, and move on to the next thing you want to accomplish.
