When you hear your own voice

So much is happening in the world right now — the passing of tWitch has me freaked out, the weather is extreme, all-things politics (I could go on and on). And many of you may be taking the next two weeks off to celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice, and New Years.

And many of you may feel like you have to catch up on life and try to do it all before the end of the year…

I want to challenge you not to.

I saw a post in a local mom’s group this week. I will paraphrase a bit of what she said:

I’m just ok. I have not been feeling like myself for a while or truly happy. But I should be. I have an amazing husband, an adorable son, family and friends. I think I should feel better though. I may be overanalyzing things but I think I need to somehow get a confidence boost and increase my self esteem — but how do I find time to figure out what I need?

I was that woman. How much more can I help? What more can I do?

And a woman jumped in and I’ll paraphrase her response:

Try to eliminate one thing a day for the next month — you really won’t miss it and you’ll start to realize that not having everything being perfect is ok. Let stuff go. You and everyone around you will survive. Put yourself first.

Rest. Make space to hear your thoughts. Get quiet.

For that is when you hear your own voice.

So as we go into a time that for many is stressful and hard and not always as joyful as all the holiday songs make it sound, instead of doing more, do less these two weeks.

Take care of yourself, hug your family, find more giggles, play games, go outside — and, as much as your brain tells you to check all those boxes off your list, don’t. You won’t get this time back.
